Genesis of a Ghost Story
(Featuring sexy twins, haunted toilet paper and some genuine paranormal activity!)

It began with an intercontinental conversation between two writers late one night:

Sahara Kelly (New England): So, you’re thinking ghost story?
Scott Carpenter (California): Could be fun. We haven’t written one…and I’m imagining a couple of hot ghost girls - oh - twins!
Sahara: Uh…hmm. Louisiana, maybe. I went to a wonderful plantation on a vacation there years ago…
Scott: How about the one from Forrest Gump? That’s the one I’m seeing in my head…

Two keyboards busily chatter as they search for links and send them to each other via IM. There is stunned silence on both coasts as they realize they’re looking at the SAME PLANTATION HOUSE - Oak Alley. It’s the one from Forrest Gump AND the one Sahara visited way back when.

Scott: That’s it. We have to do a ghost story. I’m gonna write the twins scene.
Sahara: I don’t believe this, but yeah, it’s a sign. And if you do twins, I’m having sex in a bathtub.
Scott: TMI, Sahara.
Sahara: No, I mean my characters. (Rolls eyes)

There is silence for a while as Scott develops his scene with two very wicked ghost girls who bring their erotic talents through time to plague the hero, and Sahara goes for that claw-footed bathtub session, complete with strangely scented bubbles and a hot guy in cutoffs who is very good with his tools. Much eye-rolling ensues on both coasts, along with a lot of laughter and some truly awful puns.

From then on, the entire book seems to want to be written. There’s a crucial clue, a flower. Sahara can’t believe her eyes when she does a little research and stumbles over a ghost orchid. Seriously. Scott is similarly amazed to find the odd little wrinkles he tends to throw in just to keep Sahara on her toes - they’re backed up by fact and fit the story like a custom-made pair of shoes.

And the toilet paper? Definitely haunted, but you’ll have to read the book to find out why!

The result? Whispers in the Dark, a fun romp through Louisiana with a handsome hero (Louis) and a no-nonsense psychic. It’s also a bit of a time-travel tale, with a lot of humor, as always.  It remains one of Scott and Sahara’s favorite books for many reasons, but especially because ALL the above is absolutely true. Sometimes, things you can’t explain just happen. And in this case it was an amazing bit of paranormal activity for two writing partners who heard those whispers in the dark!!!
Want a sneak peek at Louis? Scott and I don’t spend a lot of time describing our characters, because we both believe readers should put their own faces to the folks whose adventures they share. But this guy…well, he’s got all the necessary attributes. Most importantly? The smile!!!

(And yes, in the book Louis has one blue and one grey eye. Sorry, that’s just too hard to find on stock photo sites! LOL)

Coffee, Wraith, demon :)

This looks like a great read. Thanks for sharing how it came about. I find it interesting how authors co-write.
